The first picture is Hôtel de Ville, and Gatsby's house is similar as that building. In the book, it said " The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard- it was a factual imitation of some Hôtel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool, and more than forty acres of lawn and garden. It was Gatsby mansion."
The second picture is from the movie <Great Gatsby> and that is Tom's mansion. In the book, Nick said:" their house was even more elaborate than I expected, a cheerful red-and-white Georgian Colonial mansion, overlooking the bay. And Tom's mansion imitate a rich oilman house.
Those mansions can express both Gatsby and Tom are rich and have very high social standing. However, their mansions showed their different personality. Tom was just a normal rich man, the reason he build the mansion is to show off, show people how rich he is, he is aimless. However, why Gatsby built a mansion similar as Hôtel de Ville I still don't know, but I am sure it have some mean, the architectural concept of Hôtel de Ville was influenced by the belief of The Renaissance, and it also went through a lot of experience such as The French Revolution, I think because Gatsby went through many experiences, like Hôtel de Ville, and then he became successful, he used his mansion to represent his life and show peo
