Willy is extremely admire his dead bother Ben because Ben caught a good opportunity to went out to adventure and became wealthy by finding diamonds in Africa jungle. Additionally, Ben is a represent of success in Willy’s perspective so when the scene which Ben was thought about what he did wrong in the past, Ben appeared into his imagination. By the way, the biggest regret in Willy’s entire life was that he refused Ben’s invitation which took him to Alaska because he thought his job- being a salesman had stable salary on that time and much safer than adventuring in Africa. He didn’t want to take the risk of it.
Ben is the represent of “self-made man”, he didn’t be wealthy by inherited money but through hard working and education. Willy is the represent of those people who tried to be self-made man but fail at last. He has the same background with Ben and he also working very hard. For example, he drove his car to New England for promoting his products and went back home at mid-night. However, he failed at last because he didn’t realize that the era was changeable which made salesman become tuff job. Era discarded Willy.
Back to the movie, when Ben visited Willy’s family, Willy asked him about the information about their father and introducing , in order to give some advice to Biff and Happy how succeeded finically. He believed that the key to attain success is personality instead of hard work. However, the fact proved his idea was not exactly right.
By the way, Ben always wore formal white suit in the movie and that made him look like a gentleman. But in the next scene that Ben played fight with Biff, he pretended to shake hand with Biff, in fact he played trick on Biff and put him down. He won by cheating and he implied to Biff this is the only way to achieve success in the world. In addition, (assuming Ben was not just normal person who took charge in transporting diamonds in Africa) he said to Willy: “The jungle is dark but full of diamonds”. Ben is not simple as what we thought.
When Willy’s sons complained to their father, Linda stood out and argued to them that Willy was not a man what they thought like. She said even Willy didn’t make a lot of money, nevertheless he walked through hard life and he didn allowed him to fall into his grave like a old dog. What’s more he loved family and worked hard every single day. Linda rejected to expose Willy’s lies because she accepted American Dream that everyone could be successful.
