From most people perspective, America is the “Land of opportunity”. In fact, it is still far away from obtaining this achievement. There are 3 main factors prevent the U.S from being the land of opportunity. There are income inequality, education and ineffective contraception. Fortunately, based on some researchers’ observation, the U.S still can be the land they expected
Income inequality has already existed in America for a long time, which formed a huge gap between the poor and the rich and that cause people are hard to raise their economic ladder in America. Heather Boushey suggested that “Enacting paid sick days and giving workers the ability to better bargain workplace flexibility.” Workers want to earn money to support their family or tried to move up their economic ladder, even just a little bit, therefore, they will still go to work if they are sick and the illness will spread out to every employer. That is the barricade of companies’ interest. Thus, her advice is good for both sides.
What’s more, many low income students are far behind other advantaged students in vocab and also their behavior in classes really influence their classmates study. Besides that, many graduated students don’t contain any skills which are required by the companies. Therefore, setting higher standard can keep underachievers away and career technical training to increase employment rate.
In addition, a lot of young adults don’t planned carefully before they have a baby and most of them are born into the bottom ranks so that the upward mobility cannot improve. Isabel V. Sawhill proposes that providing a more effective contraception is helpful to decrease the rate of teenage pregnancy.
“Research shows that access to more effective (but expensive and hard-to-get) forms of contraception could help there.”
After U.S solves those issues, it still has chances to become “Land of opportunity”.
