<The Catcher in the Rye> was written by Jerome David Salinger in 1998 which was the only one full-length novel of him. And the novel was the experience of Holden Caulfield, and the story was consists of depression, anger. This book was even banned by the government because the context of this book however now it had lifted a ban for a lot of years. But the real personality of Holden is positive and we can learn a lesson from him so from my perspective that teenagers should read <The Catcher in the Rye>.
First, Holden Caulfield was a teenager, so it is easy for teenager readers to be a part of this book. Holden Caulfield is one of the anti-hero in American literature. His character is very complex and lived in a dark era but he resist reality. Firstly, Holden is a representative of “bad” boy, he was foul-mouthed, almost the first sentence of him was “Goddam”, and he also smoked, was addictive in alcoholic drink. The impression of Holden let readers feel he was degenerate, obscene. But he didn’t take drugs, pretended like Stradlater- a playboy. He still had a wonderful dream, proposed to be the catcher in the Rye, he aspired to be far away from dark society, and the back to the environment, to be the friend of naive friends and owned a clean place forever. In our real life, we also can find our community has so many negative for example illegality underground gambling house, Internet bar, drug trade. A lot of teenagers can’t resist tempt and be a juvenile criminal. They lost their mind and never can find a way to get out. There is an ancient dictum in Chinese: “Vegetarian abstinence is by no means a critical rule so much so that Buddha centers in one's heart.” Vegetarian abstinence is just a form, the belief of each guy in their inner heart is important and constant. In my opinion, this was the loftiest character in the world, how many people can get this personality, I also want to possess this, I am still trying.
Therefore, he also know how to resist the society not just follow it. The most of people lived in uncivilized community for some avoidless reasons who want to be a good guy but can’t resist it. “one who stays near vermilion gets stained red, and one who stays near ink gets stained black.” Resistance is one of the necessary skill, if we don’t have resistance in our personality, do we have difference between slavers.
Secondly, Phoebe also is my favorite character in <The Catcher in the Rye>, when Holden was depress and want to live independently, Phoebe gave all her money to his brother and decided to follow him. Even she made this decision without considering. That let me think that have a bosom friend is awesome who comfort you when you are depressed, and give you support when you are poor.
In conclusion, this book is suit for teenagers to read.
