First, I want to say the similarity between Holden Caulfield and Harry Potter. Their age is similar and both of them dissatisfied with the world around them and in a special era, they are the hero ("hero") of America and every American teenagers loved them. But nowadays, Holden Caulfield becomes a negative example in America and more and more people hate this character. He was like a bright star before and now he is falling down. Because Holden lived in a world consist with phony, sex and so much negative value but he aspired a chaste world, so he became cynicism and alienation. He hated all the things around him and regard all of them as enemy because his purpose was finding truth; his behavior made other people can’t understanding why. And from my perspective, he didn’t know why he lived in the world or what his ambition was, because from <Catcher in the Rye>, we only know his dream is be the catcher in the rye (obviously), and catch children who try to run to the valley however that is not realistic, who want to do this job, I mean in 2013, all the teenagers want to go to good university and get a well incoming job, so I don’t exactly understand why Holden’s dream is the catcher in the rye. I think maybe I didn’t have experience in that special era so I can’t feel it. What’s more, he despised sexual relationships before two people falling love but he still finding prostitute; he was a leader without responsible, he lost all the stuff of Pencey fency team on the subway…… That’s not over, Holden’s behavior and his belief has conflict, the real Holden in his inner-heart conflicted with the world, so the end of the story is he went to psychiatric hospital to get treatment. He still need to make a compromise with the world. In conclusion, Holden’s life is conflicted and he used negative ways to solve problems, the representative of antihero.
Harry Potter is more positive. He also was a leader of quidditch-playing, and resisting black magic. I watched movies before, Harry Potter always saved all the staff in the Hogwarts. From my viewpoint, he always stood on the good sides therefore in America, the people with heroism will be more popular than antihero.
Also, the value of young teenagers has changed, we have league of heroes because we love someone who can saved us when we are in danger.
What’s about antihero?
